"If the public becomes more aware of the environmental dangers of
lead wheel weights and is given alternative wheel balancing choices then
there will be a decrease in lead entering the environment. It is
important that we make sure that the water we drink and the air we
breathe is free of lead." TEAM DEAD WEIGHT

One liter of water at 4°C will weigh 1000 grams.

One gram of lead dissolved into 1 liter of water (1000 grams of water)
equals 1000 PPM or 1,000,000 PPB lead concentration

The EPA safe limit for lead in any water is 15 PPB/Liter.

If one liter of a solution contains 1,000,000 PPB lead,

divide 1,000,000 by 15 and you will have calculated that

the one liter of solution containing 1,000,000 PPB lead

is more than 66.666 times the USA EPA acceptable threshold

limit of 15 PPB lead for one liter of water at 4°C.

Using the same calculations, if a solution containing

1,000,000 PPB Lead/Liter was hypothetically and accidentally released

into a water supply it could potentially contaminate

1,000,000 PPB/15PPB/Liter=66,666 liters of water

or more than 66,000 liters of water.

*** 1 milligram(mg)/liter (1 PPM) =1000 micrograms(µg)/liter (1000PPB)
*** One gram of lead/liter = 1000 millgrams (1000 PPM)/liter = 1,000,000
micrograms (µ) (1,000,000 PPB)/liter

A one ounce lead wheel weight weighs over 28 grams.

1 gram of lead(Pb)/Liter concentration in solution equals

1000 milligrams(mg) Pb/Liter = 1000 PPM Pb/Liter =

1,000,000 micrograms Pb/Liter = 1,000,000 PPB Pb/Liter

Therefore 385mg Pb/Liter=385 PPM Pb = 385,000 micrograms Pb =

385,000 PPB Pb/Liter.

Milligrams Per Liter
(Parts Per Million)

A part per million is equal to a milligram per liter.
Parts per million (abbreviated ppm) is one part in a million parts.
Parts per million refers to a ratio of weights.
One part per million is one pound in a million pounds, one ounce
in a million ounces, one gram in a million grams, etc. Therefore:

1 ppm = 1 pound per million pounds, or, since

120,000 gallons of water = 1,000,000 pounds

1 ppm = 1 pound per 120,000 gallons of water

To visualize a part per million, a penny weighs two grams.
Imagine dividing that penny into 2 million parts.

For that same penny,to visualize a part per billion,
imagine dividing that penney into 2 billion parts.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milligrams Per Liter

Milligrams per liter also refers to a weight ratio.
One milligram per liter is the same as one part per million
when the reference volume is water because,

1 gram (weight) = 1,000 milligrams and

1 liter of water weighs 1,000 grams;

therefore,

1 liter of water = 1,000,000 milligrams (1,000 x 1,000)

so,

1 milligram in one liter of water = 1 milligram per liter or
one part in a million parts

Science research team "Dead Weight" recognizes the need to protect the public from exposure to lead hazards. There are no federal regulatory controls governing use of lead wheel weights. Environmental health hazards associated with lead wheel weights are a preventable problem. People are exposed to lead fragments and dust when lead wheel weights fall from motor vehicles onto the nation's roadways and are then abraded and pulverized by traffic. Lead wheel weights on and alongside roadways can contribute to soil, surface and groundwater contamination and pose hazards to downstream aquatic life. Lead negatively affects every bodily system. While it is injurious to people of all ages, lead is especially harmful to fetuses, children, and adults of childbearing age. Effects of lead on a child's cognitive, behavioral, and developmental abilities may necessitate large expenditures of public funds for health care and special education. Irreversible damage to children and subsequent expenditures could be avoided if exposure to lead is reduced.
